The Bensalem Township K-9 Unit was established in 1962 and since has been dedicated to assisting the department and the community in a variety of ways. Currently our unit is comprised of four patrol dogs, three of which are cross trained in narcotic detection, one single purpose narcotic detection dog, and one explosive detection dog .Our patrol dogs assist the patrol division in situations that require extensive searches to locate hidden suspects, missing children, and discarded evidence. They are also trained to protect the police officers and apprehend criminals when necessary. Our narcotic detection dogs are used to assist our patrol and detective divisions to locate hidden narcotics. Our explosive detection dog assists the township and the county with explosive detection sweeps, and suspicious package searches. All of our dogs have gone through extensive training programs and are currently certified by the United States Police Canine Association. These dogs not only assist us in our fight against crime, but also help the department build a relationship with township residents through numerous community demonstrations.
